Here at Penzance Ballet School we try to offer our students as many opportunities for performance and further training as we can:
Our students perform in a local dance show organised as part of the St Just Lafrowda celebrations. It’ s a wonderfully friendly, supportive and above all fun introduction to performance for our students. The children perform their dance at a matinee and evening performance in front of up to 300 people. For photos please see our photographer’s gallery.
School outings and workshops
We think it’s crucial for our children to see ballet to be able to link their weekly training with the performance art, so each year we take the children to see live ballet: sometimes Duchy Ballet or national companies.
We aim to widen our students’ knowledge and understanding through learning workshops and reading materials – for example mime workshops based around the ballets that we see. The learning booklets we produce for our students can been seen on our resources pages.
We are proud to support Duchy Ballet, Cornwall’s own youth ballet company. We encourage our students to audition for roles and we were proud to support Isabella, one of our older students through Duchy’s performance of Sleeping Beauty in 2016.
Duchy Ballet holds an annual summer school offering a range of dance classes for children to enjoy including ballet, contemporary, lyrical and musical theatre.
The Cecchetti Society Summer School is held at Tring Park School for the Performing Arts. A fully residential week-long intensive course for boys and girls, the course gives young students the chance to take part in daily ballet classes with introductory lessons in other genres, e.g. Jazz, Contemporary, Classical Greek, Spanish, National, Musical Theatre and Repertoire.
There are three Cecchetti Associates Schemes – Welsh Associates is our closest and offers classes for young dancers aged from 8 years.
Other associates classes are held in the Southwest – including Ballet Boost, an Associates scheme led by the Rambert and Royal Ballet Associates. We encourage our gifted students to audition. We are really pleased to support one of our male dancers, Casper Ward in his well deserved training as a Royal Ballet Junior Associate.
Festivals & competitions
The Cecchetti Wales & West Area Awards are designed to give children and young dancers who are not in vocational training, the experience of participating in a competition on stage in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Awards take place annually in the Spring in Cardiff, students age 8 and over are encouraged to enter.
There are several dance festivals held within Cornwall, into which Cecchetti Network schools successfully enter children.
